AFTER an epic performance against Galway Kilkenny were crowned All Ireland Senior Hurling Champions at Croke Park.

The opening minutes of the match were tense with Joe Canning scoring the first point of the game for Galway from a free after six minutes. Henry Shefflin replied almost immediately and there was little between the two sides. In the 15th minute Galway’s David Burke scored two goals in the space of as many minutes and Kilkenny showed their champion spirit with a response of a point by TJ Reid and a goal by Ritchie Power. At half time Kilkenny were the better side and led by 1-11 to 2-4. This was reflected by Galway’s inability to score a sinle point from in play in the first half.

Galway opened the scoring in the second half but Kilkenny dominated with their style, prowess and confidence ensuring that they would be returning to the banks of the River Nore with the Liam McCarthy Cup. The majestic Walter Walsh enjoyed a magnificient performance scoring an impressive 1-03 before being substitued by Colin Fennelly who put the sliotar in the back of the net within minutes of being on the field.

With Galway down to 14 men in the 48th minute hopes of All-Ireland glory were fast slipping out of sight for the Tribesmen. Kilkenny’s Henry Shefflin made history for winning nine All-Ireland titles on the field of play and there was no doubting that the Cats were deserving champions with their 11-point win when the final whistle blew.
