Richie Hogan, Kilkenny All Ireland Champion and All Star, rugby pundit George Hook and Limerick hurler Niall Moran show off their hurling skills to local Haitian children. The trio are in Haiti with over 300 volunteers as part of Haven's Build it Week. The group will build 50 houses this week for local Haitian families affected by the 2010 earthquake.
WHILE teachers around the country have been enjoying their midterm breaks Kilkenny Senior hurling Star has been building houses in Haiti.
The four-time All-Ireland medal winner is taking part in the Haven for Haiti build-it week. For one week since October 29, Richie Hogan swapped his hurling helmet for a hard hat as he helps build 50 new houses for displaced Haitians.
On January 12, 2010 a devastating earthquake hit Haiti. 200 000 people were killed and over a million lost their homes. Nearly two years after the quake, Haiti is still fighting to recover and its problems are far from gone.
Although relief workers confirm that much has been done to rebuild the country, there still are many tasks that have not been completed. Hundreds of thousands of people still live in tents, set up by aid organisations.
Haven for Haiti’s build it week as an attempt to provide housing for people living in make shift accommodation since the earthquake. Hogan is part of a 300 strong volunteer group who are building 50 houses for local Haitian families as part of Haven’s Build it Week 2011.
