No evidence has been uncovered to date suggesting an historic basement link from City Hall (the Tholsel) to the Medieval Mile Museum (St Mary’s Church).
Supervised archaeological work has been taking place in the building in recent times, as part of new plans proposed for City Hall. Responding to a question from Cllr David Fitzgerald at a meeting of the City Municipal District earlier in the month, senior engineer Tony Lauhoff said there was no evidence found so far of any such connection.
A number of works have taken place to date, including archaeological test excavations, building surveys and site investigation. Excavations to date at the old receipts office have uncovered the cobbled St Mary’s lane and one burial.
There will be a number of physical changes to the structure in an effort to bring the Tholsel up to modern fire safety and accessibility standards. At present, it does not comply with regulations. Part of the offering will involve a tour of the historic basement/dungeon.
Plans will shortly go on display for public consultation.
